Yun Ui-jun (pictured), a special appointment professor at Seoul National University, has been elected as the new president of the Korean Academy of Engineering.

The Korean Academy of Engineering stated on the afternoon of the 17th that it held its 55th regular general meeting at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul and elected Professor Yun Ui-jun as the next president.

The new president, Yun, is a world-renowned authority in the field of compound semiconductors. He has been active as a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Seoul National University for 28 years, producing numerous talents in the semiconductor process field and holding multiple foundational patents in the micro-LED field, which is gaining attention as the next-generation display.

Yun has served as vice president of the Korean Society for Metals and Materials, president of the Korean Society of LED and Optoelectronics, and has held positions as the head of research at Seoul National University, head of the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, director of the Next Generation Convergence Technology Research Institute, and deputy director of the Graduate School of Convergence. He also served as the investment manager for core industries at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy R&D Strategy Planning Division, chairman of the Ho-Am Engineering Prize review committee, inaugural president of the Korea University of Energy and Technology, and vice president of the Korean Academy of Engineering.

Yun noted, "In this global transformative era provoked by advancements in artificial intelligence and climate change, I will strengthen the role of think tanks in Korea for sustainable development by fostering engineering development and nurturing talents, which are the key driving forces for industrial innovation." He added, "On the occasion of the 30th anniversary, I will lay the foundation for the Korean Academy of Engineering's leap forward."

As vice presidents of the academy, Hong Soon-guk, chairman of the Nano Convergence Industry Research Association, Kwak No-jung, president of SK hynix, Park Soo-kyung, professor at KAIST, Baek Eun-ok, professor at Hanyang University, and Han Seung-hun, professor at Yonsei University, have been elected. The new president's term will begin on January 1, 2025, and will last for two years.
