Yann LeCun, a professor at New York University and chief scientist of Meta AI, regarded as one of the 'world's top four scholars' in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), is visiting Korea to give a lecture on international cooperation cases and the importance of AI.

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that Professor LeCun will deliver the keynote speech at the '2024 K-Science & Technology' event at the Fairmont Ambassador Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, on Nov. 11.

This event is hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT to share policies and cases necessary for strengthening international cooperation and to support participation in Horizon Europe. Approximately 200 participants will include 108 representatives from 73 countries and four international organizations, along with officials and researchers from the Korean government.

Professor LeCun is credited with founding convolutional neural networks (CNN) and won the Turing Award in 2018 alongside Yoshua Bengio and Geoffrey Hinton. Among them, Geoffrey Hinton also received the Nobel Prize in Physics this year. He co-leads Korea's AI international cooperation project, 'AI Frontier Lab,' with Professor Cho Kyung-hyun of New York University.

He will present the keynote lecture discussing the advancement of AI technology and global collaboration. Domestic researcher Cha Eun-mi from Korea University will also deliver a keynote speech on cultivating talent through international science and technology cooperation.

After the keynote speech, Gu Hyuk-chae, the Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination of the Ministry of Science and ICT, will announce the 'Science and Technology Diplomacy Initiative.' He will introduce plans to implement strategies for international cooperation in the field of science and technology, including collaboration ecosystems, channels, and results. Specific plans will be discussed with relevant ministries and announced in the first half of next year.

Diplomats from the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and Sweden will also gather to share cases of international cooperation in science and technology and ICT with Korea. They will present achievements and future goals, including Horizon Europe, the AI Seoul Summit, and the establishment of the Korea-Vietnam Science and Technology Institute (VKIST).

Researchers participating in the Boston-Korea project and the Global AI Frontier Lab will also attend to present representative research findings and achievements.

Minister Yoo Sang-im said, 'This event has been arranged to explore new possibilities for international science and technology cooperation' and added, 'We will mobilize all our capabilities in the private sector, government, science and technology, and diplomacy to promote Korea's leap to becoming a global science and technology hub.'
