Through a three-way cooperation system built with POSCO and KISWIRE, Simmons jointly developed mattress springs, a core bed material.
Executive Vice President Lee Jong-seong of Simmons' production and logistics strategy division met with reporters on the 19th at the "Simmons Factoryum" in Icheon, Gyeonggi, and said, "Many brands talk about premium these days, but the premium Simmons has in mind cannot be explained by a single material or technology," adding, "Only when every process—from material selection and research and development, production, quality control, delivery, to customer care—is connected by the same standard is the premium finally completed."
Simmons opened its Factoryum, a bed production facility, that day and outlined its premium strategy. The Factoryum, with a site area of 59,646 square meters, is an integrated production base that brings together production facilities, research and development (R&D), and quality control in one place.
Simmons said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with POSCO and KISWIRE and jointly developed spring wire for mattresses based on vanadium special alloy steel. POSCO develops the special alloy steel, KISWIRE precisely processes it, and Simmons applies it to mattresses. It is characterized by maintaining stable support and durability even after long-term use.
Managing Director Kwon Oh-jin of Simmons said, "It is not simply about using vanadium material; we researched and developed characteristics optimized for mattresses from the material stage," adding, "Other companies may be able to copy the spring shape, but it is difficult to imitate in a short period the supply chain that continues from material development."
Simmons also presented quality control and the production environment as key elements of its premium. In addition to existing radon and thoron safety product certification, environmental label certification, and flame-retardant mattresses, it secured UL Greenguard Gold certification and Dermatest "excellent" certification. Managing Director Kang Kyung-jun of Simmons said, "Because a mattress is the product that stays in contact with the skin for the longest time in a day, we do not stop at obtaining certifications but repeat renewals and verifications every year," adding, "Even if certification expenses increase, it is the most basic investment for consumers' health and safety."
It also said it maintains a strategy that prioritizes quality over quantity in its production method. The Factoryum can produce more than 1,000 units a day, but actual output is limited to about 600 to 700 units a day. For premium customer service, it runs an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot alongside full-time professional counseling.
Meanwhile, Simmons opened its R&D center and production plant that day and introduced its quality verification process. The laboratory was operating an in-house tester measuring the vibration transmission performance of independent pocket springs and durability testing equipment for furniture such as frames and drawers.
Simmons said it analyzes each user's sleep environment and reflects it in product development through research on body pressure distribution and spinal shape analysis, and sleep studies that simulate temperature and humidity environments. A Simmons official said, "Every product goes through thousands of quality control items before shipment, and the inside of the plant is managed for quality with a clean production system that minimizes dust inflow and indoor logistics routes."
