Shinsegae(004170)The department store said on the 20th that it opened a new gallery space, "Shinsegae Gallery Gangnam," on the mezzanine (1M floor) of House of Shinsegae and will hold the first exhibition, a solo show by first-generation Korean Dansaekhwa master Choi Myeong-yeong, titled "Plane Condition."
Shinsegae Gallery Gangnam is the first standalone exhibition space established at Shinsegae Department Store's Gangnam branch. The aim is to expand the customer stay experience by adding art exhibitions to the existing shopping- and dining-centered content.
Shinsegae Department Store plans to use the gallery to allow customers to encounter works by major artists from Korea and abroad within an everyday shopping space.
Shinsegae Gallery opened in 1963 with the launch of Shinsegae Department Store as "Shinsegae Hwarang." Since then, it has presented exhibitions in diverse fields including fine art, design, architecture, and fashion, establishing itself as a leading culture and arts space within the department store. The company said the opening of the Gangnam branch gallery is meaningful as it expands the operating scope of Shinsegae Gallery, which has continued for more than 60 years, to its flagship Gangnam location.
At the opening exhibition, Choi Myeong-yeong's solo show "Plane Condition," about 18 paintings and drawings will be presented, centered on the artist's representative "Plane Condition" series. The exhibition runs through Sept. 9 and is free for anyone to view.
A Shinsegae Department Store official said, "We are introducing our first standalone gallery at the Gangnam branch, a global landmark department store that goes beyond Korea," and added, "Starting with Choi Myeong-yeong's opening exhibition, we will continue to present high-quality shows so that customers can enjoy artistic inspiration and cultural experiences beyond shopping."
