Director Na Hong-jin's film "Hope" surpassed 1 million moviegoers on the 17th, the third day of its release.
Distributor Plus M Entertainment said that in the afternoon, "Hope" surpassed 1 million moviegoers. This is one day faster than director Yeon Sang-ho's zombie film "Colony," which passed 1 million on the fourth day of release, and is the fastest among this year's releases.
Released on the 15th, "Hope" tells the story that unfolds when an unknown extraterrestrial being arrives at Hopohang, a fictional village near the Demilitarized Zone.
It is Na's first new sci-fi film in 10 years since "The Wailing" (2016), and with stars including Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, as well as Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Taylor Russell among the Hollywood cast, it drew attention even before its release.
Based on actual audience ratings, it scored 81% on CGV's Egg Index, showing somewhat mixed reactions. The suspense and action direction received high marks, but there is criticism that the narrative falls short.
