A worker suffered serious injuries after getting caught in a machine at an SPC affiliate Shany factory. It was another accident a little over two months after a finger amputation accident at another affiliate's factory last month.
According to the Korean Chemical, Textile & Food Workers' Union (KCTFU) on the 11th, at about 9:38 a.m. the previous day at the Shany Daegu plant in Nongong-eup, Dalseong County, Daegu, a Vietnamese migrant worker, a woman in her 40s identified as A, had her right arm caught in a bread dough aligning machine while working. A, who sustained a deep laceration to the skin of her right arm, was transported to a hospital.
Police and labor authorities are currently investigating the exact circumstances of the accident and whether there were violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
On Apr. 10, at the Samlip Siwha plant, two workers in their 20s and 30s suffered finger amputations. At the time, President Lee Jae-myung ordered a thorough investigation into the accident, and police formed a dedicated investigation team.
The Korean Chemical, Textile & Food Workers' Union (KCTFU) said in a statement that day, "We strongly condemn SPC Group's barbaric conduct," adding, "In connection with the finger amputation accident at the Samlip Siwha plant, at the request of the KCTFU SPC Samlip branch, we held special negotiations with management and received a pledge for follow-up measures to prevent accidents, but an industrial accident occurred at Shany, an SPC Group affiliate." It went on to urge, "The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) and police should thoroughly investigate the management responsible for repeated serious accidents and impose severe punishment."
