Nokdong Brewery Co., Ltd. (Nokdong Brewery) said on the 30th that its fresh makgeolli "Goheung Yuzu Makgeolli Light" won the grand prize in the traditional Korean rice wine fresh makgeolli category at the 2026 Korea Wine & Spirits Awards.
Goheung Yuzu Makgeolli Light is a new product developed using yuzu, a specialty of Goheung, South Jeolla, and is a fresh makgeolli completed by Nokdong Brewery based on the brewing know-how it has accumulated with its existing "Goheung Yuzuju." Yuzu from Goheung is added during fermentation to bring out a refreshing aroma, and it is designed to harmonize with makgeolli's signature smooth flavor.
Artificial carbonation was not injected; the carbonation naturally generated during fermentation was kept as is. Nokdong Brewery said this allows drinkers to enjoy both the freshness and crisp taste unique to fresh makgeolli, completing a light and clean mouthfeel that blends with yuzu's subtle fruit aroma.
Developed in a "light" style that reduces the burden compared with conventional makgeolli, the product is also designed so younger consumers and beginners can enjoy it easily. Its bright aroma, smooth texture, and brisk effervescence come together, making it versatile for pairing with a variety of foods.
Based in Goheung, South Jeolla, Nokdong Brewery is a distillery that has produced traditional liquor using local agricultural products and has proven the potential of regional specialty liquors through its flagship product, "Goheung Yuzuju."
A Nokdong Brewery official said, "We are very pleased that the newly introduced makgeolli product has received such positive reviews following our flagship Goheung Yuzuju," adding, "We plan to continue introducing products that capture the appeal and flavor of the region through various traditional liquors made with agricultural products from Goheung."
