Yeonil Wine Import & Sales Co. said on the 21st that South African wine "Arid The King" won the grand prize in the New World red wine category at the 2026 Korea Wine & Spirits Awards.
Arid The King is a red wine produced in Western Cape, South Africa, characterized by a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. Strong sunshine and a dry climate naturally limit grape yields while increasing fruit concentration and tannin density.
The wine shows a deep violet-red color, with aromas featuring a blend of blackcurrant, earthy notes, and licorice nuances. On the palate, a structure ranging from medium to full body and firm tannins form the core, while spice flavors from about 12 months of French oak aging add balance. Overall, it is evaluated as a style that combines power and elegance.
Arid & Co., the producer of this wine, is a winery founded with inspiration from the dry natural environment of the Northern Cape. True to the name "Arid," it views the extreme environment with respect and aims for winemaking that draws out the essence of the grape. Based on a traditional philosophy—natural fermentation, minimal intervention, and bottling without filtration—it focuses on faithfully reflecting the individuality of the terroir and vintage.
The brand also seeks differentiation by featuring images of South African wildlife on its wine labels. The lion on the Arid The King label symbolizes strong structure and focus, visually expressing the wine's style.
