Woowa Brothers, the operator of Baemin, said on the 30th that it "offers a sincere apology to customers who were harmed" in connection with a case in which a member of a criminal ring, who covertly got a job at one of its outsourced customer service vendors, misused customer information.
That day, Woowa Brothers said on its website that it "takes this incident very seriously" and is "actively cooperating with the police investigation and swiftly carrying out follow-up measures."
Earlier, the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul arrested a group that carried out retaliation-for-hire crimes, such as throwing filth at the front doors of other people's homes for money. After receiving requests via Telegram, they was found to have obtained personal information to be used in the crimes by covertly getting hired as counselors at a Baemin outsourcing company to siphon off customer information.
Baemin said, "We are currently actively cooperating with the police investigation and swiftly executing follow-up measures," adding, "First, for cases where misuse of information was confirmed through investigative authorities, we proactively filed a report with the Personal Information Protection Commission. We are also promptly notifying customers whose information may have been accessed." The company added, "If additional damage is confirmed or if there are requests from investigative authorities, we will actively take the necessary actions."
It continued, "For the relevant outsourcing company, we are proceeding with contract termination procedures after conducting a full audit related to customer information," adding, "In line with recognizing the seriousness of the incident, we are strengthening internal controls related to handling customer information while transparently disclosing follow-up measures according to the investigation results. In addition, we will completely overhaul our management framework, including tightening hiring standards for customer service staff and conducting a full inspection of management practices."
