Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Bae Kyung-hoon of the Ministry of Science and ICT said Coupang's "self-investigation" results and compensation plan announcement were inappropriate. Bae also pointed out that, during the fact-finding process, Coupang has not been sufficiently cooperating with the public-private joint investigation team.
On the 31st, at a joint hearing in the National Assembly on the massive personal data leak at Coupang, Deputy Prime Minister Bae said, "On the 25th, the day the pan-government task force (TF) was launched, there was an announcement (by Coupang) that there were only about 3,000 leaks, and before the hearing, a compensation plan was announced," adding, "I think it was highly intentional."
He added, "I was briefed that there was cooperation with the National Intelligence Service in the process of bringing the seized materials from China into Korea, but that is not the essence," emphasizing, "What matters is to transparently disclose what the actual contents of the materials brought into Korea are, and how closely they match the findings of the joint investigation team and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC)."
Deputy Prime Minister Bae also pointed out that Coupang is not actively cooperating with the investigation. He said, "Coupang is clearly a subject of investigation at present, and even though cooperating with the investigation should be the top priority, it is not sufficiently responding to the public-private joint investigation team's requests for materials."
He also said, "The joint investigation team requested more than 160 sets of materials, but so far only a little over 50 have been submitted, and the truly important information has not been secured," adding, "On this point, only statements based on clear facts should be made, and the compensation plan should have been announced on the basis of those results."
