Harold Rogers, Coupang's interim CEO, said on the 30th, "The compensation plan we have put forward amounts to 1.7 trillion won. This is an unprecedented level."
Rogers answered this way to a question from lawmaker Kim Hyun-jung of the Democratic Party of Korea at a joint Coupang hearing held at the National Assembly that day, asking whether there were plans to present a more aggressive compensation plan.
Coupang said the previous day that it felt deeply responsible for the personal data leak and would implement a customer compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won to restore customer trust. For customers with 33.7 million accounts who received notice of the leak at the end of November, the company plans to provide four single-use purchase vouchers worth a total of 50,000 won per person starting Jan. 15 next year.
The compensation plan consists of Coupang products across Rocket Delivery, Rocket Direct Purchase, Marketplace for Sellers, and Marketplace Coupang (5,000 won), Coupang Eats (5,000 won), Coupang Travel products (20,000 won), and R.LUX products (20,000 won). However, the compensation amount for Coupang and Coupang Eats, which customers use most in practice, is only 10,000 won, while the remaining 40,000 won was allocated to separate Coupang services, drawing criticism.
Kim said, "The compensation plan says 50,000 won will be provided, but 40,000 won of that is discount coupons for R.LUX and Coupang Travel, which customers do not usually use," adding, "It is nothing more than a deceptive promotion aimed at making victims spend more money, promoting unpopular services, and preventing people from leaving Coupang."
