Coupang said on the 29th it plans to implement a customer compensation plan worth 1.685 trillion won to take responsibility for the recent personal data leak and restore customer trust.
Harold Rogers, interim head of Coupang Korea, said, "All Coupang employees deeply reflect on how much concern and distress the recent personal data leak caused customers," and "we prepared a compensation plan as a responsible measure for customers."
Starting Jan. 15 next year, Coupang plans to provide customers with purchase vouchers worth 1.685 trillion won. The recipients are customers of 33.7 million accounts who received a personal data leak notice at the end of Nov. Both WOW members and regular members will receive the same. Former Coupang customers who received the personal data leak notice are also included. Coupang plans to sequentially guide the use of the purchase vouchers via text messages to customers of 33.7 million accounts.
Coupang will provide each eligible customer with four single-use purchase vouchers totaling 50,000 won: Rocket Delivery/Rocket International/Marketplace Seller Rocket/Marketplace Coupang all products (5,000 won), Coupang Eats (5,000 won), Coupang Travel products (20,000 won), and R.LUX products (20,000 won).
Eligible customers can check sequentially in the Coupang app starting Jan. 15 and apply them when purchasing products. Further details will be announced separately.
Interim head Rogers said, "Taking this incident as a turning point, Coupang will put 'customer centricity' into practice from the heart, fulfill responsibility to the end, and be reborn as a corporations trusted by customers," and "we once again offer our deepest apologies to our customers."
