Harold Rogers, Coupang's acting representative, said on the 17th that he is aware of President Lee Jae-myung's remarks regarding the personal information leak incident.
Acting representative Rogers said at a hearing of the Science. ICT. Broadcasting. and Communications Committee at the National Assembly that day, "I reviewed a translated version of the remarks to understand the content. As a responsible corporations, Coupang will respond in full to everything this situation requires." He added, "We take the situation seriously. Whether here today or regarding concerns held by the regulatory authorities, we will do our utmost to address the issues raised."
Earlier, on the 9th, the president mentioned Coupang and ordered officials to find a way to make fines imposed on corporations more realistic. On the 12th, during a briefing by the Personal Information Protection Commission, he also ordered a revision to the enforcement decree so that in cases where serious personal information leaks have occurred repeatedly, the penalty surcharge would be imposed at "3% of the highest annual revenue among the past three years," rather than "3% of the three-year average revenue."
Acting representative Rogers said, "We deeply apologize for causing concern and worry." In response to a question from Reform Party lawmaker Lee Jun-seok about why Coupang Inc. Chair Bom Kim did not appear, he said, "As the representative director of Coupang Korea, I will answer any questions with sincerity," and stated accordingly. However, regarding that answer, Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Choi Min-hee, chair of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, instructed that the "ceremonial greeting" be omitted and deleted from the stenographic record.
When asked by Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Han Min-su what instructions he had received from the chair, Rogers replied, "We take this matter seriously and will do our utmost to address all concerns held by the regulatory authorities," and, "We will do our best to resolve any concerns or inconveniences caused to consumers."
In response to a question from Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Hwang Jeong-a about why no compensation plan for customers had been presented, acting representative Rogers said, "We will prepare a responsible compensation plan along with the results of the investigation and make an announcement."
