Home furnishing retail corporations Ikea Korea said on the 15th it will hold a special event through the 31st to mark the 40th anniversary of the launch of Ikea meatballs.
Boasting a 40-year history, Ikea meatballs are Ikea's signature menu item, with annual sales of 1.4 billion pieces. During the event, Ikea Korea will offer a 50% discount on all meatball menu items sold at the Swedish Restaurant every Wednesday and Friday to members of the free membership program "Ikea Family."
By presenting the receipt coupon received when purchasing a meatball menu, customers can get a 10% discount on frozen meatballs HUVUDROLL sold at the Swedish Food Market. At the Swedish Bistro, customers can try a limited-edition menu consisting of eight meatballs.
Ikea meatballs were developed with Ikea's own recipe by Swedish chef Severin Sjöstedt in 1985 and introduced after about 10 months of testing to promote the flavors of Swedish food culture. The recipe remains almost the same even 40 years later, and since 2015 it has been varied in different ways, such as with plant balls. Since 2006, the Swedish Food Market has sold frozen meatballs and sauce so customers can easily enjoy Swedish food at home.
An Ikea Korea official said, "Meatballs that embody Swedish culture have been an iconic menu representing Ikea's values and culture for the past 40 years," adding, "We hope you will experience Swedish culture along with meatballs available only at Ikea stores and enjoy a happy shopping experience."
Meanwhile, Ikea Korea will introduce a new seasonal limited menu using hallabong, a seasonal winter fruit, through Feb. 28. At the Swedish Restaurant, customers can try the tangy "tangy hallabong roll cake," and at the Swedish Bistro, the smooth "Jeju hallabong cream castella" and "hallabong ade."
