Harold Rogers, Coupang's interim CEO, on the 10th expressed a firm resolve to respond thoroughly to the large-scale personal information leak. Rogers also cited restoring lost customer trust as a priority.
According to the industry, Rogers said in an internal notice to Coupang employees that "our priorities are clear right now," adding, "We will respond thoroughly to this incident, strengthen information security to prevent a recurrence, and restore trust."
He also emphasized, "We will focus on stabilizing the organization and supporting every team as we move forward." It is seen as signaling an active push to restore trust while stressing organizational stability and responsible action to employees.
Earlier the same day, Park Dae-jun, Coupang's CEO, said, "We deeply regret disappointing the public over the recent personal information incident," adding, "I fully recognize responsibility for both the occurrence of this incident and the response to it, and I have decided to step down from all positions," as he resigned.
Following Park's resignation, Coupang appointed Harold Rogers, chief administrative officer and general counsel (CAO & General Counsel) of parent company Coupang Inc., as interim CEO. Rogers plans to focus on easing customer concerns stemming from the data leak, managing the internal and external crisis, and stabilizing the organization.
Coupang said, "We deeply apologize for causing concern due to the personal information leak," adding, "We will strengthen information security to prevent a recurrence and do our utmost to restore trust."
Meanwhile, the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee will hold a hearing on the 17th on Coupang's large-scale personal information leak. As witnesses from Coupang, six people were included: Bom Kim, Coupang Inc. board chair; former Coupang CEO Park Dae-jun; former Coupang CEO Kang Han-seung (now head of North America); Brett Mathis, Coupang chief information security officer (CISO); Min Byung-gi, Coupang vice president of policy cooperation; and Cho Yong-woo, Coupang vice president in charge of National Assembly and government affairs.
As government and related-agency witnesses, Bae Kyung-hoon, Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT; Ryu Shin-hwan, acting chair of the Broadcasting and Media Communications Commission; and Lee Sang-jung, president of the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), were adopted. As references, Song Kyung-hee, chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission; Kim Do-seung, president of the Personal Information Protection Act Society; Kim Seung-ju, Korea University professor; Kim Chang-hee, AhnLab executive director; and Kim Hong-min, head of the Korea Association of Telecommunication and Internet Business, were adopted.
