Hair and scalp brand Dr. Banggiwon said on the 7th that it signed a technology transfer agreement with the National Institute of Forest Science and is introducing "Dr. Banggiwon Shampoo," which applies a patented ingredient, barleybap tree branch extract.
Dr. Banggiwon said that unlike existing hair loss shampoos that tout improvements to the scalp environment, Dr. Banggiwon Shampoo was developed to target the strengthening of dermal papilla cells, which are key to hair growth.
Recently, the National Institute of Forest Science under the Korea Forest Service scientifically proved through a human application study on the number of shed hairs, scalp elasticity, scalp moisture, hair density, hair thickness, and hair length for a "barleybap tree extract" test product that the barleybap tree has the effect of strengthening "dermal papilla cells," which are central to hair growth and development. As improvements were confirmed across all key hair and scalp indicators, Dr. Banggiwon said barleybap tree extract is expected to draw attention as a functional raw material from a native plant along with growth in the domestic hair loss market.
According to data from the National Health Insurance Service, as of last year, the number of outpatients seeking care for "hair loss" reached 240,000. Among them, those in their 40s and 50s totaled about 90,300, and those in their 20s and 30s totaled about 103,000. The hair loss care market, once dominated by middle-aged male customers, has recently expanded to include demand from younger generations. As demand grows for fundamental hair loss solutions rather than temporary improvements, domestic cosmetics makers are introducing hair loss relief products highlighting functional ingredients and clinical data.
A Dr. Banggiwon representative said, "Consumers want not just simple scalp cleansing or temporary volume improvement, but scientifically proven ingredients and a fundamental solution to strengthen hair roots," and added, "Barleybap tree extract is a material developed by a domestic research institute with proven efficacy, and Dr. Banggiwon Shampoo embodies that scientific technology."
