LOTTE Chilsung Beverage is reducing plastic use by launching the ultra-light Isis.
On the 28th, according to the retail industry, LOTTE Chilsung Beverage has carried out activities for sustainable growth, focusing on Isis, including the use of water-soluble adhesives, the launch of label-free products, and the use of recycled plastic. The ultra-light Isis is a representative example and was launched in Oct. 2024.
The ultra-light Isis reduced the weight of the 500ml PET bottle from the previous 11.6g to 9.4g, down 18.9%. Compared with the weight at its initial launch in 1997 of 22g, that is a 57% reduction. The annual reduction in plastic due to the introduction of the ultra-light package is tallied at about 268 tons.
During development of the ultra-light Isis, LOTTE Chilsung Beverage focused on producing a package that is light yet sturdy. It verified package stability through various tests, including side and bottom damage from free fall at the typical drinking height (1.4 meters), container deformation after freezing and thawing, distribution and transport, and stacking. To prevent deformation of the thinner container, it applied a net-like design, and reinforced durability with a bottom structure that gathers toward the center like flower petals. It can be easily crumpled and discarded, improving convenience for recycling.
A LOTTE Chilsung Beverage official said, "Just as label-free bottled water led the label-free trend across industry beyond the related sector, we expect the ultra-light Isis to spur eco-friendly technological innovation in response to consumers' heightened values-driven spending."
