CU said on the 23rd it will release Walnut Mayo Spicy Pork Kimbap, a commercialized version of the winning entry from the 2025 Gimcheon Kimbap Festival competition to be held in Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province.
Last year, CU introduced O-sam Half-and-Half Kimbap with the winning recipe from the 1st Gimcheon Kimbap Cooking Contest, and about 500,000 units were sold.
Walnut Mayo Spicy Pork Kimbap was made from the recipe that won the 2nd Kimbap Cooking Contest co-hosted by BGF Retail and Gimcheon in Aug., overcoming competition of 59 to 1. The judging panel included the head of BGF Retail's ready-meal team, the kimbap MD, developers, and other industry experts.
It uses a special walnut mayo sauce made with walnuts, a Gimcheon specialty, and domestic Korean pork spicy stir-fry as the main ingredients. The nutty yet spicy taste comes from the crunchy texture of walnut, the spicy pork stir-fry, and the mayo sauce in harmony. The product packaging features "Ggoddari," the character of the Gimcheon Kimbap Festival, to highlight that it is an award-winning item.
CU plans to set up a special booth in front of the main stage of the 2025 Gimcheon Kimbap Festival, which will be held from the 25th to the 26th, to debut Walnut Mayo Spicy Pork Kimbap to visitors on site.
Head of product division Yu Seon-ung said, "By launching the festival's winning product at CU amid nationwide interest in the Gimcheon Kimbap Festival, we expect it will help revitalize the local festival and expand sales channels for local specialties."
