Coupang will join the Manufacturing AX Alliance, a public-private joint committee composed of sector-specific AI-leading corporations and experts that the government formed to push an AI grand transformation (AX) of Korea's manufacturing industry. As a key corporation leading the AI grand transformation of the retail and logistics industry, Coupang plans to lead innovation based on AI technology.
Coupang said on the 10th that Chief Executive Park Dae-jun attended the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's Manufacturing AX Alliance launch ceremony.
The Manufacturing AX Alliance consists of 10 alliances by industry, including AI factory, AI manufacturing services, autonomous vehicles, and humanoids. Representatives of corporations by industry, AI experts, and academia will put their heads together to discuss deregulation and institutional improvements for the AI grand transformation, as well as innovation projects. Coupang will participate regularly in the retail and logistics alliance.
Previously, Coupang had been participating in the retail-AI alliance launched by the ministry in April 4th. It has shared cases that incorporate various AI technologies into retail and logistics, such as plans to improve fulfillment center work efficiency using cutting-edge technologies like AI, robots, and automation.
Coupang is introducing AI-based, state-of-the-art automation and robotics technologies to fulfillment sites. At major logistics infrastructure facilities such as the Daegu fulfillment center, the largest in Asia that opened in 2023, and the Gwangju Advanced Logistics Center completed last year, it is rapidly expanding advanced AI-based technologies such as automated guided vehicles (AGVs), sorting robots, and depalletizing robots.
This year, it has been raising the automation rate of key hub fulfillment centers based on AI technology. By expanding automated AI robots that carry or lift heavy items, it is increasing the efficiency of fulfillment operations.
A Coupang official said, "Through participation in the AX Manufacturing Alliance, we will strengthen cooperation with related agencies such as the ministry and do our best to ensure the AI grand transformation in the retail and logistics sector can be carried out successfully," adding, "Going forward, as a tech-based innovative corporation, Coupang will accelerate AI technology-based innovation in logistics and customer service to compete in the global market and further strengthen win-win cooperation with local small merchants."
