On the 7th, Seoul National University World Food Tech Creation Center announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Testing & Research Institute (KTR) and the World Food Tech Council on the 5th to develop global standards for the food tech industry.
This agreement was promoted to establish a framework of standards, certification, and standardization, which are the core foundations of international competitiveness, in line with the growth trend of the global food tech industry, and to enhance the overseas expansion and industrial credibility of corporations.
The food tech industry is rapidly growing in various areas, including cell-cultured food, food robotics, and data-driven customized services. However, to lead the global market, establishing a standardized certification system is essential.
Through this agreement, the three institutions plan to kickstart international standardization work based on a consortium that connects industry, technology, and research.
Seoul National University will be responsible for research and technical support related to establishing industrial standards and technical standards, KTR will support the development of standards and certification testing methods for the world food tech industry, and the council will handle policy proposals for standard establishment, response to corporations' demands, and practical support based on a network of experts and institutions related to the field.
To promote systematic and efficient business operations, the three institutions will form a working committee to accelerate practical tasks.
The results of this agreement can be confirmed as guidelines and certification prototypes in the 'World Food Tech Forum' to be held in December, together with domestic and international experts from academia and industry. Additionally, they aim to achieve tangible results through demonstration projects and pilot certification procedures.
Professor Lee Gi-won, the director of Seoul National University Center and co-chair of the council, noted, "Food tech is a creative technology that addresses the population, climate, food, and health crises facing humanity in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)," adding, "I will actively support the establishment of international standards so that K-food tech can lead the global market."
