On June 1, Lotte Department Store announced that it will participate in the official event with its RE:EARTH campaign in celebration of World Environment Day (June 5).
World Environment Day is an international commemorative day designated by the United Nations to raise awareness about the importance of environmental protection. Since 1987, related events have been held annually in the host countries selected from each continent.
This year, Korea has been selected as the host country, and the official event will take place at the Jeju International Convention Center from the 4th to the 5th of this month. Twelve institutions and corporations will participate, and Lotte Department Store is the only participant from the retail sector.
Lotte Department Store will operate exhibition booths over the two days under the theme of the ESG (environmental, social, and governance) campaign 'RE:EARTH'. The booths will introduce the environmental cleanup project 'RE:EARTH Market', which is an eco-friendly program where trash collected in urban areas and along coastlines can be exchanged for zero waste products. From 2022 to last year, more than 16,000 people participated, recovering a total of 60,000 liters of waste. The booths will also showcase 11 types of 'upcycling goods' made from department store waste.
In addition, Lotte Department Store will sequentially hold the 'RE:EARTH Week' plogging (an environmental cleanup activity where participants pick up trash while walking or jogging) campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment from the 4th to the 15th at 39 stores nationwide. Pre-registration can be done through the department store's application, and all participants will receive a plogging set and zero waste goods.
Park Seong-cheol, head of the external cooperation division at Lotte Department Store, noted, "Participating in the official event for World Environment Day is a meaningful occasion that demonstrates the responsibility and commitment of leading corporations in the retail sector regarding ESG. We will play a crucial role in spreading sustainable consumption culture while sharing the sustainability and social responsibility of corporations."
