Garanggarang Brewery's 'Garanggarang Makgeolli' received the grand award in the Korean rice wine category for traditional liquor at the 2025 Korea Wine & Spirits Awards.
Garanggarang Brewery was started by the owner, a chef, who opened the brewery after searching for delicious makgeolli and making traditional liquor.
Garanggarang Makgeolli 12% is a makgeolli made using Garak rice from the Busan region, consisting only of water, rice, and nuruk. It is characterized by a traditional taste without any gimmicks.
Garanggarang Makgeolli grapefruit flavor is a low-alcohol makgeolli made with fresh grapefruit syrup, featuring a rich natural carbonation.
Karangkarang 15% is an unwatered liquor. The initial taste is sweet, but the finish is intense, making it popular among alcohol enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, the Korea Wine & Spirits Awards is the representative liquor competition in South Korea, now in its 12th year. Organized by ChosunBiz since 2014, the event aims to 'discover and promote good domestic liquors and support the formation of a healthy liquor culture.'
This year's event featured 236 companies showcasing a total of 1,008 brands, making it the largest scale competition for comprehensive liquor in the country. Among them, 431 brands received the grand award.
