Baek Jong-won, CEO of Theborn Korea, announced the cessation of production of 'Baekham,' which has been embroiled in controversy over the pork content and price inflation.
On the 19th, Baek noted on Theborn Korea's official website, “We have stopped producing Baekham, which many have pointed out,” and added, “We are developing new products that meet customer expectations in terms of taste and quality. We will introduce products that have a competitive edge in the global market,” while posting a second apology.
He further stated, “I deeply apologize for the disappointment and concern caused by the continuous controversies related to me,” adding, “All employees of Theborn Korea are taking the current situation seriously and are fully committed to company-wide innovation.”
This apology comes just six days after the official message posted on the website on the 13th.
Regarding the origin controversy, he said, “We are thoroughly checking all product descriptions, including some online origin labeling issues,” and added, “We will swiftly implement a monitoring system composed of external experts to ensure that consumers can feel assured.”
Earlier, Baek was embroiled in controversy for promoting 'Baek Jong-won's Baeksuk Doenjang' and 'Hanshin Pocha Nakji Bokkeum' made with foreign ingredients as if they were domestic products, and he has been criminally charged with violating origin labeling laws.
He also apologized for the allegations of violating food sanitation laws after images surfaced of a pesticide sprayer being used to distribute apple juice at a festival. He explained, “We will thoroughly check the equipment used at the festival, prioritizing the safety and trust of customers, and we will be diligent in hygiene management,” adding, “We will strive to contribute further to revitalizing the local economy through regional markets, old town development, and festival projects.”
Regarding the franchise owners operating Theborn Korea franchises, he stated, “We will not spare practical support for the franchise owners who are watching the current situation with concern,” and added, “We will do our utmost to overcome the challenging food service industry together.”
