CJ CheilJedang announced on the 16th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the development of marine and fisheries research in the Incheon area with Incheon Metropolitan City (Incheon Fisheries Resources Research Institute) and the Incheon national university.

According to CJ CheilJedang, the signing ceremony took place on the 14th at the Incheon national university, attended by officials including Rajesh Potineni, the global science and technology manager at CJ CheilJedang, Hwang Hyo-jin, the deputy mayor of global city affairs of Incheon, and Park Jong-tae, the president of the Incheon national university.
Through this agreement, CJ CheilJedang,Incheon Metropolitan City, and the Incheon national university will actively cooperate for the development and education of marine fisheries in the Incheon area. Key projects include joint research on the industrialization of land-based seaweed farming and joint studies for the development of seaweed seeds and practical applications.
Additionally, they plan to join a consortium for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' land-based seaweed farming project to ensure successful project execution. This consortium currently includes Jeollanam-do, Haenam-gun, and others.
CJ CheilJedang aims to strengthen its collaboration with local governments and academia through this memorandum of understanding. Last month, CJ CheilJedang entered into a memorandum of understanding related to land-based seaweed farming with Jeollanam-do and Haenam-gun. They plan to accelerate practical research by pursuing agreements with Jeju Island and collaborating with Jeju National University and the Jeju Fisheries Cooperative. Currently, CJ CheilJedang is researching ways to repurpose land-based farms that have halted operations in Jeju into facilities for land-based seaweed farming.
CJ CheilJedang was the first in the industry to initiate the development of land-based seaweed farming technology in 2018 and successfully cultivated it in tanks in 2021. The following year, it secured a dedicated variety suitable for land-based farming in South Korea. Furthermore, CJ CheilJedang has developed technology for land-based farming that allows for the production of consistently high-quality seaweed year-round and is moving forward with the advancement of this differentiated technology.
A representative from CJ CheilJedang noted, “We will actively collaborate with the local community and academia based on our differentiated technological capabilities to lead the global spread of K-seaweed.”
