The amount of wool filling in 100% wool blankets sold domestically varied by more than three times for each product.

The Korea Consumer Agency (Consumer Agency) tests and evaluates 8 types of 100% wool blankets from 8 brands, finding that the thermal insulation of the wool comforter is measured at 2.11 to 2.48 clo, which is about 50% of the thermal insulation level of winter down comforters. /Courtesy of Consumer Agency

The Korea Consumer Agency recommended that sellers display the total amount of filling so that consumers can verify it when purchasing wool blankets. The agency announced on the 13th that, as a result of testing eight types of wool blankets sold in the market, all products used 100% wool, but there were differences in filling amounts. This is a comparison of the amount of filling contained in one queen size (200 × 230 cm) wool blanket.

The Clarheim 'Lana' (620,000 won) product contains 2,240g of wool filling, while the Casamia 'Bruno 60-count high-density wool comforter' (300,000 won) contains only 680g, revealing a maximum difference of 3.3 times. Two types displayed the total amount of wool filling, while two types indicated the amount per unit area (ounces), and the remaining four types did not provide any indication.

After the consumer agency recommended that six companies display the total amount of wool filling, all of them responded that they would provide the information.

The washing method labels also differed. Five types indicated machine washing, while two specified hand washing, and one indicated dry cleaning. The two types labeled as hand wash experienced clumping of the wool filling after being hand washed.

The consumer agency explained that after washing the two hand-wash indicated types and one dry-clean indicated type three times using machine washing (wool cycle, neutral detergent), neither clumping nor damage occurred. These companies accepted the agency's recommendation to change the washing method label to 'machine wash.'

The thermal insulation of the eight types of wool blankets was reported to be between 2.11 and 2.48 clo, which is 46 to 54% of the average of 4.60 clo for winter down blankets, indicating that wool blankets are adequate for use in spring and fall.

The lightest weight was the Elle 'Dernis Wool Comforter' at 1,930g, while the Clarheim 'Lana' was the heaviest at 3,750g.

The thickest was the Crispy Baba 'L'atelier Wool Quilted Blanket' at 2.5cm, while the Elle 'Dernis Wool Comforter' was the thinnest at 1.2cm.

However, all eight products met safety standards regarding harmful substances such as formaldehyde and pesticides.

The consumer agency advised, "The quilting form, thickness, weight, and filling amount of wool blankets vary by product, thus individuals should choose blankets with appropriate size, thickness, and weight to match the seasonal insulation and to avoid slipping while tossing and turning during sleep."
