CJ CheilJedang announced on the 17th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Jeollanam-do and Haenam County for the selection of a seaweed seed production and land-based aquaculture public project.

This agreement was made to successfully promote new projects in the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' sustainable excellent seaweed seed production and land-based aquaculture technology development project for 2025. The government will provide a total of 35 billion won over five years until 2029 to develop technology for producing high-quality seaweed on land.

Jeollanam-do accounts for about 80% of the country's seaweed production. Combining the technological capabilities of CJ CheilJedang, which was the first in the industry to develop land-based aquaculture technology, expectations are high that the development of land-based seaweed aquaculture will gain momentum.

Through this agreement, CJ CheilJedang and Jeollanam-do and Haenam County will establish a consortium and collaborate comprehensively on the development of seaweed-related technologies, fostering the seaweed industry, and promoting the distribution of products.

The consortium will carry out collaborative research for the development and practical application of seaweed seeds, mutual research on high-quality seaweed for commercialization, and cooperation in the purchase of raw and commercial products produced through national projects, distribution, and sales promotion.

CJ CheilJedang plans to globalize Korean seaweed through co-growth with Haenam County. CJ CheilJedang began developing land-based aquaculture technology for seaweed for the first time in the industry in 2018 and succeeded in tank cultivation in 2021. The following year, it secured a dedicated variety for the first time in the country. CJ CheilJedang added that it plans to continue developing innovative technologies in collaboration with academia, including the University of Incheon and Jeju National University.
