Samsung E&A said on the 11th that it signed an EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) contract for the "SAN-7 project" ordered by SABIC Agri-Nutrients of Saudi Arabia.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service electronic disclosure system, the project is worth about $3.5 billion (about 4.7 trillion won). Samsung E&A will handle the work on its own, targeting completion in 2030.
The plant will be built in the Jubail Industrial City in eastern Saudi Arabia. Using natural gas, it will process 3,500 tons (t) of ammonia per day and then produce up to 7,700 tons of urea fertilizer per day based on that. All fertilizer produced will be exported. In particular, post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) technology will be introduced to recycle carbon dioxide generated during the ammonia production process as a feedstock for fertilizer synthesis.
At the contract signing ceremony held on the 9th (local time) at SABIC headquarters in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, key executives from both companies attended, including President Namkoong Hong of Samsung E&A; President Faisal Mohammed Al-Faqeer of SABIC; Chairman Abdulrahman Al-Faqih of SABIC Agri-Nutrients; and President Fahad Misfer Al-Battar.
SABIC Agri-Nutrients, the client, is SABIC's fertilizer-focused subsidiary. Samsung E&A has successfully completed SABIC's key projects in the past, including ethylene oxide/ethylene glycol (EO/EG), polypropylene (PP), proving shorter schedules and strong technical prowess; the company said that this trust led to winning the SAN-7 project.
Ammonia and fertilizer facilities are among Samsung E&A's main specialties, and the company is also pursuing a low-carbon ammonia construction project in the United States. With global food security concerns and supply chain disruptions, investment in fertilizers—crucial to food production—is increasing worldwide. Samsung E&A plans to differentiate the project by combining unrivaled technology, extensive construction experience, and innovative methods such as modularization and process automation.
A Samsung E&A official said, "This is a project for the client's flagship product that we are undertaking in Saudi Arabia, built on a long-standing relationship of trust," adding, "We plan to actively respond to the growing global demand for fertilizer plants by pooling our technology and experience to execute the project successfully."
