The National Geographic Information Institute of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 7th it will hold the "5th toponymy and geospatial information capacity-building program" from the 8th to the 11th of this month at the National Geographic Information Institute, Suwon Convention Center, and other venues.
Nineteen people will take part in the program, including public officials and experts in charge of toponymy and geospatial information from 16 member states of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH), such as Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil, as well as PAIGH officials.
The program will focus on expert lectures introducing domestic policies and the latest technologies related to toponymy and geospatial information, along with field visits. Participants will attend expert lectures on topics such as Korea's toponymy system, old maps, national atlas, trends and implications in toponymy research, and the use of geospatial information in Korea. They will then visit sites where they can experience Korea's geospatial information and history, including the National Map Museum, the National Satellite Operations Center, and Aegibong Peace Ecological Park.
Korea joined as a standing observer at the 49th PAIGH board meeting in 2019. Standing observers have the right to officially attend and speak at PAIGH general assemblies but do not have voting rights.
National Geographic Information Institute Director Kim Won-dae said, "We will continue to build sustained cooperative relationships with countries in the Americas and enhance the international standing of Korea's toponymy and geospatial information fields."
