A site of about 3.47 million square meters (1.05 million pyeong) around Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan County, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, has been finally selected as the candidate site for a new national industrial complex that will lead future growth in the Honam region.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 25th that, following discussion and resolution at the Industrial Location Policy Deliberation Committee held on the 25th, it confirmed the area as a candidate site for a national industrial complex.
This announcement puts into concrete action the pledge of "expedited promotion of the Muan national industrial complex," one of the items agreed to by six institutions on Dec. 17, 2025, for the transfer of the Gwangju military airport. Based on a request from Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, the deliberation committee (Chairperson, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) first vice minister) examined from multiple angles the suitability of the location conditions, the rationale for project implementation, and the impact on balanced national development, and chose the site as the candidate.
With the finalization of this candidate site, momentum has been secured to build a key industrial hub in the Honam region, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT). Going forward, Jeonnam-Gwangju City and Muan County plan to swiftly prepare step-by-step action plans, including proactively recruiting corporations that actually wish to move in, based on regionally specialized strategic industries.
In addition, systematic support at the government level will continue. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) decided to maintain close cooperation with local governments and related agencies at every stage of establishing the plan to create the industrial complex. In particular, it aims to flawlessly complete the second phase of the Honam high-speed rail construction project, including Muan Airport Station, which is underway with the goal of opening in 2027, and to grow the area into a high-efficiency logistics and industrial hub city where Muan International Airport and the rail network are connected as one.
