Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) directly purchased more than 10,000 rental-scam victim dwellings to provide relief.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 7th that, after three meetings of the committee for supporting victims of rental scams held in July, 609 cases were designated as rental-scam victims or similar. As a result, the cumulative number of officially recognized cases has exceeded 40,000.
Of the 1,476 cases subject to review, 563 new applications and 46 cases that reestablished eligibility through appeals were finally approved. In contrast, 867 cases that could recover deposits on their own or did not meet the victim criteria were rejected or excluded from support.
With this additional designation, the total number of official victims determined by the government increased to 40,278. The government has provided more than 72,000 relief measures in various ways, including temporary suspension of auctions, financial support, housing support, and legal advice.
In particular, LH's purchases of victim residences are accelerating. As of the end of July, LH tallied a total of 10,256 victim dwellings purchased. Since the beginning of this year, the average monthly number of purchases has been 752 units.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) and LH are operating purchase review meetings and a fast track to speed up acquisitions of victim dwellings, and plan to continue consultations with district courts on proceeding with auctions to support housing stability.
In addition to post-incident support, preventive programs to block rental damage in advance are also underway. Together with the Korea Housing & Urban Guarantee Corporation (HUG), "safe contract consulting" is being offered at eight regional hub centers nationwide, and prospective tenants ahead of a lease contract can receive advice on analyzing rights relations and reviewing contract clauses.
