Seoul said on the 3rd that it has completed the Myeong-dong design landscape project and will expand design landscape projects across the city.
Seoul, together with Jung-gu, finished the "Myeong-dong pedestrian environment improvement and rest space creation project" at the end of July. Myeong-dong has been transformed into a cultural space that blends media art and relaxation.
Through this project, a canopy was installed at the Myeong-dong entrance to enhance the nighttime landscape, and the area in front of Myeongdong Theater was created as a culture and rest plaza. Transparent railings were applied to the underground passage in front of the Central Post Office to create a photo spot overlooking the Shinsegae Department Store media facade.
Seoul plans to create spaces with rest, viewing, and cultural functions to expand stay-type spaces where citizens and tourists linger, and to boost the local commercial district.
The area around Seoul Arena in Dobong-gu will be built into a cultural street that combines K-pop, media art, and nighttime scenery in connection with Seoul Arena, which is set to open in 2027. In Naksan, Jongno-gu, viewing and rest spaces will be created, and on 4.19-ro in Gangbuk-gu, shelters and the streetscape will be improved.
For the "2027 design landscape project," Seoul selected five projects, including "Danghyeon Stream waterfront culture waterfront" in Nowon-gu, "Magok green-culture square" in Gangseo-gu, "Yongwangsan street garden" in Yangcheon-gu, "Connecting east and west of Chang-dong" in Dobong-gu, and "Hangang greenway warming-up station" in Gangdong-gu.
The selected sites focus on creating potential spaces such as underpasses beneath stations, waterfronts, and areas under overpasses into cultural and tourism hubs, and on enhancing regional economy and tourism competitiveness in connection with large-scale development projects.
Choi In-gyu, Seoul's design policy officer, said, "We will continue to expand the design landscape project that promotes consolidation among culture, tourism, commercial districts, and the regional economy to turn potential spaces across Seoul into attractions where citizens and tourists linger."
