Hyundai Engineering received a three-month business suspension over the collapse of a bridge on the Seoul-Sejong Expressway in Anseong, Gyeonggi, that left four workers dead and six injured.
According to the Seoul city government on the 22nd, the city announced an administrative disposition suspending Hyundai Engineering's business from Aug. 5 to Nov. 4.
The disposition follows a request by the Minister of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) to suspend the business of a construction contractor that caused a serious accident under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
The accident occurred on Feb. 25 last year at the Cheongryongcheon Bridge construction site in Section 9 of the Cheonan–Anseong segment of the Seoul-Sejong Expressway in Seoun-myeon, Anseong, Gyeonggi.
At the time, as crews were installing a girder, a steel structure that supports the deck, the structure collapsed, killing four workers at the site and injuring six.
The investigation was found to have determined that the accident occurred during back-launching, a process of moving the launcher, equipment used to install girders, backward. As the launcher support's center of gravity shifted, a load tilted to one side was applied to the girder, and the launcher toppled, causing the structure to collapse, the investigation was found.
The Pyeongtaek branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office indicted and detained the Hyundai Engineering site manager and the site manager of subcontractor Jangheon Industry in October last year on charges including violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and occupational negligence resulting in death and injury.
Three Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) supervisors and three Hyundai Engineering construction team leaders and members were brought to trial without detention. The corporate entities of Hyundai Engineering and Jangheon Industry were also indicted on charges including violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
