Daewoo Engineering & Construction is expanding its business portfolio as a "global power infrastructure supplier" amid the paradigm shift to artificial intelligence (AI).
Daewoo Engineering & Construction said on the 10th that it is expanding its business beyond data center construction into high value-added energy plant markets such as LNG (liquefied natural gas), nuclear power, and small modular reactors (SMRs).
LNG is regarded as a key "bridge energy" that supplements renewable energy. In particular, it is drawing attention as a practical power alternative for AI data centers, which consume large amounts of electricity around the clock without interruption.
Daewoo Engineering & Construction is the only comprehensive builder in Korea to have carried out all processes across the LNG value chain, including gas processing facilities (CPF), liquefaction plants, and LNG storage and regasification terminals. Daewoo Engineering & Construction completed a total of 11 LNG liquefaction plants in Nigeria, Africa's largest natural gas reserve holder. It also completed CPF projects in Algeria and Nigeria. In Korea, it built 25 LNG tanks and carried out phases 1, 2, and 3 of the Ulsan North Port terminal.
It is also proving its competitiveness in the nuclear power sector. As the construction lead of "Team Korea," Daewoo Engineering & Construction is participating in the new nuclear power project for Units 5 and 6 at Dukovany in the Czech Republic. Since starting work on Wolsong Units 3 and 4 in 1991, it has executed more than 30 nuclear power projects. Recently, leveraging design experience from the decommissioning of Wolsong Unit 1, it has been expanding into the nuclear decommissioning market.
It is also strengthening the SMR business, which has recently drawn attention. Daewoo Engineering & Construction has built a cooperative framework with KEPCO KPS and has been in ongoing discussions to develop the innovative SMR (i-SMR), and is actively pursuing construction cooperation and joint investment with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP).
A Daewoo Engineering & Construction official said, "We are expanding our business scope beyond data center construction to encompass energy infrastructure as a 'Global Energy Provider,'" adding, "Based on LNG, nuclear power, and SMRs, we will provide total energy solutions that combine data centers with energy infrastructure."
