Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) said on the 25th that it has completed development of "AI-based earthwork design automation software" to support building information modeling (BIM) design in the site development sector.
Building information modeling (BIM) is a technology that visualizes and automates key construction information in 3D across all stages of construction, from planning and design to construction and maintenance, to reduce errors and waste in advance.
The "AI-based earthwork design automation software" applies reinforcement learning-based AI to earthwork design, a key work type in site formation projects, to optimize and automate determination of site planned elevations and earthwork haul design.
Introducing this technology is expected to reduce earthwork haul volume by an average of about 7% compared with previous methods. The software will be distributed free of charge to design firms and others participating in BIM design services ordered by LH.
Before the software release, on the 18th LH demonstrated the developed software's functions at the LH Southern Gyeonggi Regional Headquarters and gathered various opinions on expanding BIM adoption. About 50 people, including officials from public institutions and private design firms, attended the briefing.
Meanwhile, in July last year LH also developed automation software to support BIM (building information modeling) design in the site development sector. The technology automatically calculates construction quantities and costs using construction information within a 3D model and automatically generates 3D models in conjunction with stormwater and wastewater hydraulic calculations, and it was distributed to the private sector free of charge.
Lee Sang-jo, head of LH's Smart Construction and Safety Division, said, "Following last year's two BIM design support software tools, with the additional distribution to the private sector of this AI-based earthwork design automation software, we expect BIM to become even more active," adding, "We will continue to actively introduce smart technologies such as AI and BIM to lead the digital innovation of the construction industry."
