The Ulsan thermal power plant construction and building accident investigation committee (Sajo Committee) said on the 17th it will extend by four months the investigation period into the collapse during demolition at the Ulsan thermal power plant that occurred in November last year. The investigation will run through Oct. 17.
The Sajo Committee carried out on-site inspections, hearings with related parties, material strength tests, and structural analyses. Through this, it is identifying the cause of the accident and preparing measures to prevent a recurrence.
The Sajo Committee judged that an additional investigation of the initial collapse area was necessary to determine the cause objectively, but access was limited because that area was buried in debris.
With demolition work that had recently been halted resuming and debris removal becoming possible, the Sajo Committee plans to extend the investigation period and proceed quickly.
Sajo Committee Chair Lee Kyung-gu said, "We will conduct multifaceted investigations by field—structure, construction, and systems—and, based on this, prepare thorough measures to prevent a repeat of similar accidents."
