About 2,000 public dwellings will be newly supplied in the Umyeon-dong area of Seocho District, Seoul.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 11th that it will newly designate a 193,259-square-meter (about 58,000-pyeong) site in Umyeon-dong, Seocho District, Seoul, as the Seoripul 2 public housing district.

The newly designated Seoripul 2 district took its first step with a public viewing process to hear from residents on Nov. 2024. It then held close consultations with related agencies, including the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Seocho District, and completed review procedures that carefully examined environmental impacts and disaster risks. It went on to secure district designation after passing the final deliberation of the Central Urban Planning Committee in Mar. this year.

The site offers convenient transportation to and from downtown Gangnam, Seoul, and, with Umyeon Mountain nearby, access to pleasant nature. Together with the Seoripul 1 district (18,000 dwellings), whose designation was completed in Feb. this year, it is expected to take root as a representative "jobs-housing proximity" living area that supports future high-tech industries in the Yangjae and Gangnam areas.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) decided to overhaul existing complex procedures to supply dwellings more quickly. Typically, it takes an average of about 56 months from district designation to groundbreaking for a land development project. But for the Seoripul 2 district, authorities took preemptive steps such as preparing the next-stage district plan even before the designation was finalized. They also plan to shorten the overall timeline by carrying out land preparation for site formation and design work for construction at the same time.

Through this, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) aims to move up the groundbreaking by more than two years compared with the usual project period, with the first dwelling construction work starting in Dec. 2028. The project will be jointly carried out by the Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) and the Seoul Housing and Urban Development Corporation (SH), with final completion targeted for 2035. The government plans to secure approval of the district plan in Jul. next year and implement the schedule without delays.

Lee Jaepyung, director of dwelling supply policy at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), said, "As Seoripul 2, along with Seoripul 1, is a public land development project supplied in an attractive location within Seoul's Gangnam area, we will push the project forward quickly through thorough project management and communication with residents," adding, "We will boldly cut unnecessary procedures and manage the project so that it becomes a best-practice case that innovatively accelerates progress by pursuing permits and construction processes in parallel."
