Daewoo Engineering & Construction said on the 1st it has developed a "real-time artificial intelligence (AI) translator" to support smooth communication with foreign workers.
The real-time AI translator was developed to resolve communication problems arising as the proportion of foreign workers at construction sites in Korea continues to grow. Daewoo Engineering & Construction led the development and, in cooperation with technology partner Lotte Innovate, built a tailored system for construction sites.
Daewoo Engineering & Construction applied a "construction-specialized glossary" that reflects slang and technical terms frequently used on sites to improve translation accuracy. It supports up to about 180 languages and, by applying real-time voice processing technology, minimized translation latency.
When a site manager opens a translation channel, workers can check translations in real time on their personal smartphones during morning roll call and on-site safety meetings. A Daewoo Engineering & Construction official said, "With the introduction of the real-time AI translator, understanding of instructions has improved, and accident prevention effects are also expected."
Currently, Daewoo Engineering & Construction is applying it to the office site in Euljiro, Seoul, Section 6-3-3 of Sewoon, a pilot site for smart safety technology, and to the new construction site for the Gwacheon G-TOWN development project.
