The government will support consulting for "green remodeling" to reduce energy use in aging buildings. Green remodeling is renovation to improve the energy performance and efficiency of existing buildings by enhancing insulation performance, replacing windows, and replacing outdated equipment.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 21st it will begin accepting applications on the 22nd for the green remodeling consulting support program. The program was newly created this year to support building owners who are interested in green remodeling but have hesitated due to a lack of information about construction costs or effects.

Owners of private buildings (single-family homes or nonresidential buildings) that have been in use for 10 years since approval for use (approval for use on or before Jan. 1, 2016) are eligible to apply.

Applicants for green remodeling consulting can receive customized solutions tailored to the building's condition and budget. Experts will visit the site to conduct a preliminary diagnosis and run detailed simulations. They will then propose an optimal energy performance improvement plan and estimated costs that fit the applicant's budget.

It provides an analysis of energy savings before and after improvements, the amount of energy expense savings, and the payback period. If needed, it also supports baseline surveys for safe construction, such as structural safety checks and asbestos surveys.

At the construction stage, it supports planning for construction preparation and verification of results after completion. For projects that meet the savings criteria, it also assists with documents and procedures to apply for the green remodeling interest support program.

Applications can be submitted via email to the Korea Authority of Land & Infrastructure Safety (KALIS) Green Remodeling Creative Center.
