The government will move to overhaul the metropolitan transportation system to improve networks in the southern and eastern parts of the Seoul metropolitan area, including Gwacheon Racecourse and Taereung Country Club.
The Metropolitan Transport Commission of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 3rd it will pursue a study on the "southern and eastern Seoul metropolitan transportation system."
The study is a follow-up to the Jan. 29 "plan to expand and expedite urban dwellings supply." After residents near Gwacheon Racecourse and Taereung Country Club raised concerns about traffic congestion from the housing supply, the government moved to improve the network.
The study will analyze the current state of installation and use of metropolitan transport facilities in the area and the causes of inconvenience, and will assess central and local government transport measures and nearby metropolitan transport improvement projects.
It will also analyze traffic flows by major transfer hubs and transport facilities, and forecast population changes from site development, future traffic demand, and use patterns.
Based on this, it will review short-, mid-, and long-term improvement plans and funding options for various metropolitan transport systems, including rail, roads, metropolitan buses, BRT (bus rapid transit), DRT (demand-responsive transport), and transfer centers.
Kim Yong-seok, chair of the Metropolitan Transport Commission, said, "Following the Jan. 29 announcement of the 'plan to expand and expedite urban dwellings supply,' with concerns about congestion in the southern and eastern Seoul metropolitan areas, we reflected the budget for this study in the supplementary budget to proactively review the metropolitan transportation system in the southern and eastern areas, including existing development districts such as Gwacheon Knowledge Information Town."
