Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon on the morning of the 8th visited Sinjungang Market in Hwanghak-dong, Jung-gu, to check the progress of the "design-innovation traditional market creation project."

The Sinjungang Market project is the city's first design-innovation traditional market project, planned to strengthen competitiveness and inject vitality through customized design that reflects the market's locality and historicity.

Based on the concept of "reviving small alleys so the new wave of the alleys connects to the market roof and revitalizes the entire area," it reflects Sinjungang Market's characteristics and spatial structure.

According to the design plan, the existing old arcade will have its structure reinforced, be improved with timber structures, and have daylighting enhanced to create a warm and open market image that welcomes tourists.

In addition, each of the 16 alleys in the market will feature an "open roof" in the form of a doorway so visitors can naturally flow in from outside, guiding pedestrian movement and improving market accessibility. The city also plans to create stepped structures where visitors and merchants can stay and interact.

The project is currently in the design service phase and is set to begin construction in Sep., with completion targeted for Jun. next year.

Mayor Oh said, "By rebranding around themes such as food, culture, and tourism, we will develop it into a second Gwangjang Market that domestic and international tourists love to visit," adding, "Through various support projects, including the traditional market nighttime food culture project, the alley commercial district revitalization support project that brings strength and energy to alley businesses, and the Gwanghui-dong local brand commercial district development, we will continuously review and implement multifaceted support measures to make it a global traditional market representing Seoul."
