An innovation growth facility, the "Student Creative Research Hall," will be newly built on the Sogang University campus.
The Seoul city government said on the 5th that it held the Urban Planning Committee meeting on the 4th and approved as originally proposed a change to the decision on the urban planning facility (school) and detailed facility development plan for Sogang University at 1-1 Sinsu-dong, Mapo-gu.
With this decision, the innovation growth facility to be created will allow flexible campus planning under the city's "university urban planning innovation" policy, which relaxes the diagonal plane limit along school boundaries. The diagonal plane limit is a regulation that mainly restricts building heights from the opposite road boundary (or adjacent lot boundary) within district unit planning zones. Sogang University will no longer be subject to the "school boundary 1.5D diagonal plane limit," which uses 1.5 times the width of the road abutting the site as the maximum building height standard.
The new "Student Creative Research Hall" will have a total floor area of about 18,000 square meters (13 stories above ground), with construction starting in Mar. next year and completion targeted for Sept. 2028. With this decision, Sogang University will consolidate dispersed cutting-edge departments such as the Department of System Semiconductor Engineering and the Department of Artificial Intelligence, and expand industry-academia-research collaboration facilities. A "future technology education center" (tentative name) will also be created where local residents can be taught and experience the use of artificial intelligence (AI).
