HDC Hyundai Development Company said on the 21st that it was selected on the 20th as the contractor for other civil works to build a new roadbed in Section 3 of the Southern Inland Railway (Gimcheon–Geoje) construction project through a contract with Korea National Railway.
The project to build a new roadbed for the Gimcheon–Geoje Southern Inland Railway will link 174.59 km as a single-track electric railway between Gimcheon in North Gyeongsang Province and Geoje in South Gyeongsang Province, creating a new rail network connecting the Seoul metropolitan area with the inland areas of North and South Gyeongsang and the southern coast.
Among them, HDC Hyundai Development Company, together with Jeongan Construction and SC General Construction, will build 18.196 km of new roadbed from Changcheon-ri, Gacheon-myeon, Seongju-gun, North Gyeongsang Province, to Yaro-myeon, Hapcheon-gun. It plans to construct 15.999 km of tunnels, one station (Seongju), and three inclined shafts (construction tunnels).
The total construction cost of this project is about 4.943 trillion won, of which about 287.1 billion won is for Section 3, and HDC Hyundai Development Company's share is about 229.7 billion won. Groundbreaking is scheduled for Feb.
Once the new roadbed construction is completed, direct service without transfers will be possible from Seoul to Geoje, improving access between the Seoul metropolitan area and the western part of South Gyeongsang Province. An HDC Hyundai Development Company official said it is also expected to contribute to balanced national development by boosting the local economy through revitalizing the tourism industry along the southern coast and creating local, community-based jobs.
An HDC Hyundai Development Company official said, "Because this project aims for balanced national land development, we will pursue it based on systematic safety and quality control," adding, "We will expand our influence in the infrastructure field by leveraging the social overhead capital expertise accumulated to date."
