Dongbu Corporation said on the 31st it was selected as the preferred bidder for the detailed design for the "Gunsan Port second dredged soil disposal site (section 2) embankment construction," a turnkey (design-build) project ordered by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' Gunsan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries.
The project is a large port infrastructure initiative to build a 2.12-kilometer outer revetment for the disposal site and one set of ancillary facilities across the offshore area in front of the west breakwater revetment of the Gunsan district of the national industrial complex in Gunsan, Jeonbuk State. Dongbu Corporation will participate as the lead company. The total construction cost is 262.7 billion won, and the construction period is 48 months from the start date.
The project was promoted to stably handle large volumes of dredged soil generated during navigational channel and maintenance dredging at Gunsan Port and Janghang Port. The two ports are key logistics and industrial hubs on the West Sea, handling about 20 million tons of cargo annually. However, due to their geographic location at the Geum River estuary, they faced structural constraints with sediment repeatedly accumulating in channel and berth sections.
A Dongbu Corporation official said that once the work is completed, improved conditions for handling dredged soil will create a safe environment for vessels to enter and leave. The official noted that the project is expected to enhance port operation efficiency, strengthen logistics competitiveness on the West Sea coast, and revitalize the local economy.
Dongbu Corporation won three consecutive port construction contracts this month alone. Earlier this month, it won the infrastructure work for the port automation testbed (Gwangyang Port) construction project and the phase 2 (general cargo pier) development of Jeju Outer Port. Including the Donghae New Port additional ore pier and general cargo pier, Busan Port Jinhae New Port dredged soil disposal site (zone 3) revetment section 2, and Busan Port Jinhae New Port container terminal phase 1-1 section 2, the company has secured a total of six large port projects this year.
A Dongbu Corporation official said, "Through successive orders for port construction this year, we achieved results that prove in the market our accumulated technology and project management capabilities across all port sectors, from dredging and disposal sites to pier construction," adding, "We will continue to expand our key role in strengthening national logistics infrastructure competitiveness."
