The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on the 9th it will hold the "2025 Urban Regeneration Hanmadang 10th Anniversary Event" at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 10th.
The event will bring together about 400 people, including local governments, public institutions, urban regeneration support centers, and winners of competitions that have led urban regeneration policy, to review the achievements of the past 10 years and look together at the way forward.
Since it was first held in 2015, Urban Regeneration Hanmadang has shared best practices in urban regeneration and played a role in expanding interregional cooperation networks.
Marking its 10th year, this year's event will highlight the path urban regeneration has taken and serve as a forum to share tasks and policy solutions to respond to changing urban environments.
At the pre-event seminar, "10 years of urban regeneration and the future of urban regeneration," Park In-gwon, a professor at Seoul National University's Graduate School of Environmental Studies, will give a keynote on "The history of Korea's urban improvement and inclusive urban regeneration directions," and Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS) Urban Regeneration Research Center Director Park Jeong-eun will present on "10 years of urban regeneration: achievements and limits."
At the Hanmadang event, there will be an award ceremony for the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport commendations and the winners of the urban regeneration competition. In the categories of comprehensive performance in urban regeneration and exemplary regions for completed projects, Taebaek in Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province received the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) Award, the grand prize, for creating hub facilities in a declining abandoned mining area to revive the local commercial district and improve the residential environment, which was highly evaluated for restoring community cohesion.
In addition, Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province, which won the grand prize (Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) Award) in the economic vitality category of the competition for best cases of regional revitalization, was assessed positively for operating a village hotel, a sustainable revenue model, and linked tourism programs that have boosted the local economy.
In addition, a total of 46 commendations and certificates will be awarded across eight categories, including ▲ comprehensive performance and exemplary regions (8 awards), ▲ best cases of regional revitalization areas (8 awards), and ▲ best cases of residential environment improvement (4 awards).
Kim Ei-tak, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), said, "The achievements in urban regeneration over the past 10-plus years are the result of diverse on-site actors—including local governments, regional councils, and universities—working together," adding, "Over the next 10 years, we will spare no policy support, actively cooperating with the public and private sectors so that people can feel the results." Kim added, "In line with the recent government policy to strengthen safety management at construction sites, we will do our utmost to prevent accidents by providing worker safety training and promoting safety consulting for small construction sites such as home repairs that take place in urban regeneration projects."
