Chief Executive Park Sang-sin of DL E&C halted all work at sites with similar types of jobs, saying in connection with the accident at the southern breakwater revetment of Busan Port Jinhae New Port, "We pray for the deceased and bow our heads in condolences to the bereaved family members."
DL E&C said in a statement distributed on the 17th under Park's name that "an unfortunate accident occurred this morning at the DL E&C Busan Jinhae New Port site in which a sailor passed away," adding, "We feel boundless responsibility and offer our deepest condolences to the bereaved family members."
It continued, "DL E&C, with a heavy heart, has suspended all work at the site in question and also halted work at sites where similar types of jobs are underway."
It added, "We will immediately implement all necessary measures for accident response and support for the bereaved family, and we will fully cooperate with investigations by the relevant agencies to clearly determine the cause of the accident," and "Through a fundamental cause analysis, we will reexamine the safety management system at sites and establish effective measures to prevent a recurrence."
Meanwhile, at about 8:39 a.m. on the same day, an accident occurred at a marine construction site in Sudodong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon, in which a worker, identified as A, died. During unloading of marine construction materials from a bulk cement trailer (BCT) onto a barge, A, who was nearby, reportedly fell into the sea and suffered the accident. DL E&C is the contractor at the site, and A is said to be affiliated with a subcontracted construction company.
