Daewoo E&C said on the 3rd that one worker died on the 1st at the construction site for new apartment buildings in the Wonju Dabaggol housing redevelopment maintenance project.
The deceased worker was employed by a subcontractor and was involved in hauling out earth using a crane when the accident occurred. During the work, a loading box for hauling earth (about 1 ton) fell and crushed the worker who was below ground level.
The worker was taken to a nearby hospital in cardiac arrest immediately after the accident but died.
The Wonju branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) immediately ordered work to stop and is investigating whether there were violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. Police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor plan to establish measures to prevent a recurrence of serious accidents.
A Daewoo E&C official said, "We will faithfully cooperate with the investigation by the relevant authorities."
