Hyundai E&C has completed the country's largest data center.
Hyundai E&C said on the 24th that it recently completed the "Yongin Jukjeon Pacific Sunny Data Center," a domestic hyper-scale data center, in Jukjeon, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
Hyundai E&C plans to accelerate the construction of ultra-large digital infrastructure to meet demand from high-performance computing industries, including artificial intelligence (AI).
The project, ordered by Pacific Asset Management and co-invested by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) and Shinhan Investment, is valued at 1.3 trillion won. It builds two data center buildings and ancillary facilities on a site with a total floor area of 99,125 square meters. Hyundai E&C finished construction about 43 months after breaking ground in Mar. 2022.
The center is equipped with a power infrastructure of 64 megawatts (MW) of IT load (power used for servers and network equipment to perform core IT functions within a data center) and 100 MW of incoming power capacity. That is enough electricity to power about 160,000 to 200,000 households for a day.
Hyundai E&C built the center with a network-neutral architecture that is not dependent on any specific telecommunications operator. Through this, it created an open data infrastructure that can accommodate the traffic demands of various global operators.
It also improved the center's energy efficiency and operational stability with advanced facility control technology and an energy-saving operation system. By introducing a high-efficiency cooling system, pre-cooling technology, and a real-time energy monitoring system, it achieved the industry's highest level of energy efficiency indicators, a Hyundai E&C official said.
In key sections of the center, emergency generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and chillers are dual- and triple-redundant, establishing an uninterruptible operation system in which, even if one line stops, another line immediately supplies power.
A Hyundai E&C official said, "The completion of the Jukjeon data center is a case that proves our capability to build stable and efficient infrastructure amid the advancement of the digital industry," and added, "Going forward, we will expand the digital infrastructure network centered on the Seoul metropolitan area and develop an eco-friendly data center model that responds to demand from AI and cloud industries."
