Sampyo Group donated benches made with the eco-friendly advanced material method ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) to Jeju International Airport. They will serve as comfortable rest areas for users and tourists.
Sampyo Group, a company specializing in basic construction materials, said on the 16th that it installed and donated benches made of UHPC at the multipurpose outdoor rest area on the first floor of Jeju International Airport.
Jeju International Airport recently created the multipurpose space "HELLO JEJU outdoor rest area," not only for bicycle assembly but also for travelers to rest, in line with the steady increase in domestic and international bicycle travelers visiting Jeju.
The donation of UHPC benches was made to improve the convenience of using traveler facilities and to support the creation of a space where anyone can rest comfortably at the start and end of their trip.
UHPC, used as the bench material, has a strength up to 10 times higher than ordinary concrete, and allows structures to be made thinner, securing both light weight and durability as an innovative material.
It is also drawing attention as an eco-friendly construction technology because it can maintain the same strength even with reduced use of rebar and concrete. It is lighter than conventional wood or plastic, and is evaluated as a method with practicality and sustainability. Along with free-form shaping, it enables various design expressions in form, color, and texture, expanding its use at construction sites as high-strength precast interior and exterior materials.
Since 2020, Sampyo Group has been conducting a social contribution project to make and donate upcycled benches using UHPC.
So far, a total of 20 benches have been installed for local governments and institutions, including Jongno District in Seoul, providing citizens with places to rest.
Yoo Yong-jae, managing director of the social contribution team at Sampyo Group, said, "We hope the UHPC benches installed at Jeju International Airport will become a comfortable shelter for citizens and tourists," and added, "We will continue to carry out various sharing activities that we can do together with the local community."
