Samsung C&T's construction division has won Qatar's largest solar power project, worth 1.4 trillion won.
Samsung C&T said on the 17th that it received a notice of award and held a signing ceremony for a solar power project with a total generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts (MW) ordered by QatarEnergy, Qatar's state-owned energy company.
The EPC amount, covering engineering, procurement and construction, alone is about 1.46 trillion won.
The event was attended by Samsung C&T President and CEO Oh Se-cheol and Saad Al Kaabi, Qatar's Minister of Energy and CEO, along with senior executives from both companies and other key officials.
The Dukhan solar power project is a core initiative to realize "Qatar National Vision 2030," which accelerates the energy transition centered on renewables. It is Qatar's largest solar project, with a capacity of 2,000 MW, to be carried out in the Dukhan area, 80 km west of Doha, the Qatari capital. This is the largest-capacity solar project ever undertaken by Korean corporations.
The project site alone spans 27 square kilometers, nine times the size of Yeouido in Seoul (2.9 square kilometers). It will use 2.74 million panels. When completed in 2030, it will be able to supply power to 750,000 households, considering Qatar's world-leading per capita electricity consumption.
Samsung C&T will carry out the entire process alone, from solar power design to construction. It plans to maximize output by applying sun-tracking trackers and to install inverters capable of operating in the high-temperature conditions of the Middle Eastern desert to maximize generation efficiency.
Based on the trust earned from successfully executing previous solar projects, Samsung C&T ultimately secured the contract with an optimal proposal. Samsung C&T previously carried out solar projects with a total capacity of 875 MW in Qatar's Ras Laffan and Mesaieed regions. Including this project, Samsung C&T alone will account for about 80% of Qatar's total solar power capacity.
Kim Seong-jun, executive vice president and head of ES Sales at Samsung C&T, said, "Based on the trust built while executing numerous projects in Qatar, including solar power projects, we have further strengthened our leadership in the renewable energy EPC field."
