Daewoo E&C issued an apology on the 10th in the name of CEO Kim Bo-hyeon regarding the fatal accident that occurred on the 9th at an apartment construction site in Siheung, Gyeonggi.
Daewoo E&C said, "We pray for the deceased and sincerely apologize for the indescribable sorrow and pain caused to the bereaved family," adding, "We will fully cooperate with the investigations by the relevant authorities regarding this accident and humbly accept the results, and we will also fulfill all responsibilities and obligations we can to the deceased and the bereaved family."
Daewoo E&C said, "Through constant reflection and deliberation, we will establish and improve measures to innovate safety management," adding, "With the mindset that every worker on site is my family, we will build a site management system that puts safety first and make every effort to create a workplace as safe as our own home."
Daewoo E&C suspended work at 105 sites nationwide after the accident and, after fixing safety-related deficiencies, plans to have the chief safety officer (CSO) check the site's safety readiness and decide whether to resume work if it is deemed problem-free.
It will also add a special inspection by external experts and strengthen safety inspections by concentrating checks on sites during hours with a high incidence of accidents. Unannounced on-site inspections will also be expanded.
Before planning high-risk work, it will tighten approval procedures, and when work is underway, it decided to reinforce a system in which a safety management supervisor is stationed on site. It will also strengthen preventive measures, including adding on-site personnel such as supervisors and safety and health managers, conducting special safety training for partner companies, and improving management measures for foreign workers.
At about 3:34 p.m. the previous day, a worker in his 50s, identified as A, employed by a subcontractor, died at the construction site of the new "Prugio The Ocean" apartment complex on Turtle Island in Jeongwang-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi.
